Attendees:
President, Stephen Phillips called the meeting to order on the above date and time.
In the absence of Secretary Palmira Miller, Steve Masakowski read the minutes from the previous meeting of July 28, 2009. Carol made a motion to accept the minutes as read and placed on file, seconded by Sia, with all present voting in favor.
The Organization adopted a five-point plan of suggested activities that the Township Commissioners should focus on in the coming year. The five points are the following.
1. Actively pursue grants to improve the overall quality of life within the Township, and retain the services of a grant writer to assist in this endeavor. 2. Develop a ten (10) year plan for paving of Newport Township’s roads and alleys, and draft a five (5) year capital improvement plan for the purchase of equipment. 3. Institute a program oriented toward refurbishment of all, Township owned or administered, recreational facilities. 4. Continue to actively pursue the construction of a County and or State correctional facility within the confines of Newport Township. 5. Continue, and if possible, expand Newport Township’s existing program of demolition of substandard structures throughout the entire Municipality.
Treasurer, Steve Masakowski read and presented the treasurer’s report. The Community Organization has a total of $11,904.33 in its FNCB checking and cash accounts. Its income to date this year is $6,703.42 and expenses to date this year are $9,114.71. Expenses exceed income by $2,410.29. Bill made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as read and placed on file, seconded by Carol, with all present voting in favor.
Bills and Correspondence: 1. $755.21 was paid during the month for Organization bills. 2. The operator of the Fall Festival moonwalk sent us proof of his liability insurance. 3. The Nanticoke Junior Trojans (cheerleaders) sent us a thank you for our contribution. 4. CreateAthon notified us that we were not selected for an award this year.
2nd Vice President, Tom Kashatus reports: 1. 2009 membership is at 141. 2. Tom made a motion that we print 200 more copies of the fall 2009 newsletter, and Stef seconded the motion. It was approved by a majority vote. 3. Tom will present to the Township Commissioners a list of items that we would wish to have placed in the public folder at their monthly meetings. 4. Mike Dziak, CEO of Earth Conservancy, told Tom that we can use the entrance to the Composting Center, outside the gate, for our Big Junk Drop Off next spring. 5. He also said that the Earth Conservancy has purchased $160 cameras that can photograph illegal dumping. Tom will further discuss this with him. 6. Tom asked the Community Organization to spearhead a project to pick up used tires from Township residents and take them to the tire drop off at the Hanover High School in October. Heidi made a motion to do so. Paul seconded the motion, with all present voting in favor. 7. Palmira has won an award from the Northeast Environmental Partnership for community cleanup efforts.
Committee Reports Bill Hourigan 1. Bill announced a new schedule for newsletter ads, including reduced rates for those taking repeated ads and new rates for those taking out quarter, half, and whole page ads. Francis made a motion to adopt Bill’s pricing schedule and Carolyn seconded the motion, with all present voting in favor. 2. Francis will help in getting newsletter ads. Sia Sager 1. Sia said that she sends sympathy and get well cards to Community Organization members and their families. 2. She asks that, if you know of death or illness of a member or of a person in a member’s family, to please tell her about it. Heidi Selecky and Paul Jarecki 1. Paul said that Heidi and he need help in getting photos from residents and in identifying people in photos that they already have. 2. Heidi said that she expected the final version of the Glen Lyon Breaker miniature to be sent to her shortly. 3. Heidi asked permission to print 300 copies of the Community Organization’s 2010 calendar. Carolyn made a motion to spend up to $2200 to print 300 copies of the calendar, and Tom seconded it, with all present voting in favor. Carolyn Phillips (on the Fall Festival): 1. Carolyn said that the Organization paid Front and Center Music $50 that we mistakenly failed to pay them for last year’s Festival. 2. She said that, at this year’s Festival, the Marines will come with their Toys for Tots program, Canine Corner will come, and we will have a car show.
Other Business 1. Tom said he would like to critique the Summer Fun Program. 2. He also said that the magistrate fined a man $300 for illegal dumping in Glen Lyon. 3. He further said that the Recreation Board did not hold its August meeting because of a lack of a quorum. 4. We discussed donating a piece of playground equipment to the Coal Street Recreation Park in Glen Lyon.
Carolyn made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Bill seconded the motion, with all voting in favor.
