Attendees:
President, Stephen Phillips called the meeting to order on the above date and time, welcoming new faces, then, proceeded to follow the order of business.
Secretary, Palmira Miller read the minutes from the previous meeting held February 10, 2009. Carol moved that the minutes be approved as read and placed on file, seconded by Bill, all voted in favor.
Treasurer, Steve Masakowski read and presented the treasurers report. Heidi made a motion to accept the treasurers report as read and placed on file, seconded by Mary Margaret, all voted in favor.
Bills received 1. $9.08 to Heidi, for mailing fees. 2. $20 to Palmira to print color copies sent with the NCAC, Nonprofit & Community Assistance Center, Awards Application. Bill made a motion to approve bills submitted, seconded by Mary Margaret, all voted in favor.
Palmira presented an overview of the awards applications sent: One being the Summer Fun Events, the 2nd on Environmental, Cleanup Events.
2nd Vice President, Tom Kashatus reports: 1. Mary Margaret is sponsoring Dr. William C. Kashatus Jr. for memberships. Mary Margaret made a motion to accept membership, seconded by Bill, all voted in favor. 2. Bill and Palmira toured illegal dumpsites with Julie and Angela from the PA Environmental Council. Sites seen were: a) In Alden, along the old railroad bed between Robert and Kirmar, a pit behind UGI’s gated road near Fairchild Pond b) In Sheatown, along Newport Cemetery Road down to the Red Lake c) In Wanamie, off Brown Row along the dirt road to the cemetery and the tire pit on Penopscot Trail d) Off the main road to Glen Lyon, under the power lines, before the Compose Center e) In Glen Lyon, behind St. Michaels Church on Spring Street f) Towards Lee, behind the cemetery’s on the left side of the road, several sites and an appliance pit The 3 large pits will be put out for contractor bids, the rest can be done with volunteers and county prisoners. We need to identify parcel owners, supply refreshments/lunch, trucks/ATV’s, and a back hoe. Funds are available thru COALS, Cleanup Our American Lands and Streams, and the Great American Cleanup of PA. Tom made a motion to spearhead this project with Palmira and Bill, seconded by Heidi, all voted in favor. 3. On Saturday we received the Luzerne Conservation District 2009 EPCAMR Partnership Award. Bill, Palmira, Heidi, Paul and I accepted the award for the community organization. Bill gave an overview of the awards dinner, with Heidi being the top bidder on a box of iron oxide chalk made by Bob Hughes. Bill will send out a press release for both papers, and an article in the Spring Newsletter. 4. Members discussed the following: a) Setting up a petition to endorse the building of PP&L’s 3rd reactor. b) Getting involved with the development of the South Valley Parkway. Tom made a motion to have the Community Organization endorse the building of the 3rd reactor, with no second, motion failed. Tom made a motion to endorse the South Valley Parkway Project connecting to Kirmar Ave., Alden, seconded by Bill, all voted in favor. 5. Members discussed supporting the Glen Lyon, Coal Street Playground Project. The Township received a $15,000 grant, and $41,531 from Mount Airy Resort & Casino to be used for the playground. 6. The Guardian Care Center is available as a second meeting place. 7. There is money in junk. I have 2 furnaces, 2 refrigerators, and more items for recycling. We need to make plans and recruit new help. 8. Heidi will set up a petty cash fund for mailing the DVD’s. Chris brought up an issue of derelict properties and what is being done to have them torn down. New home owners asked what was being done about the derelict property on Arch Street. They were advised to email Commissioner Roke and attend the next Commissioners meeting for answers.
Publicist, Bill Hourigan, reports: 1. The government issued Luzerne County $475,000 to remove derelict properties and 4 ½ million for Fire Departments. 2. The Spring Newsletter will be published April 1st. March 20th deadline to submit articles. 2008 donation list will be published. 3. Birchwood Nursing Home would like 10 newsletters.
Fundraising, Heidi reports: 1. The DVD’s are selling and being distributed. 2. The 2nd DVD is in the works with lots of surprises. 3. A publicity post card was developed. It was passed to members for approval. 4. All the calendars are sold. 5. Before purchasing another batch of high school miniatures, Heidi will sell all in stock, then, take orders, once 50 are ordered, members will vote to purchase more. 6. Tom addressed the development of the 2nd miniature, a coal breaker. Heidi began the process.
No Trustees Report or Unfinished Business
New Business 1. Paul discussed the organization sponsoring children who would like to participate in the little league program but cannot afford to. Bill will contact TJ Higgs and come back with information.
Good of the Order Today, Palmira personally invited Commissioner Czapracki to attend this meeting and bring Commissioner Zyla. The next Commissioners meeting is Monday, 6pm.
Frank made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Chris, all voted in favor. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.
