Attendees:
In the absence of President, Stephen Phillips, the First Vice President, Russ Sager called the meeting to order on the above date and time. He then proceeded to follow the order of business.
Secretary, Palmira Miller read the minutes from the previous meeting held June 26, 2007. . Heidi moved that the minutes be approved as read and placed on file. Joan seconded the motion with all members present voting in the affirmative.
Treasurer, Steve Masakowski read and presented the treasurers report. · The organization has a total of $4,733.16 in the General Fund, $56.58 petty cash, and $100.00 unclaimed cash prize. Expenses exceed income by $552.84. · The organization has 81 paid and complimentary 2007 memberships. Carol made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as presented and placed on file. Carolyn seconded the motion with all members present voting in the affirmative.
Bills or Communications, Steve M reports: · Office Max billed $373.12 for printing the 2007 Summer Newsletter. Murph made a motion to pay the bill. Carolyn seconded the motion with all members present voting in the affirmative.
The 1st Vice President, Russ Sager reports: · The Internal Revenue Service has approved our application for tax exempt status under section 501c3. We are now classified with the IRS as a Public Charity Organization.
The 2nd Vice President, Tom Kashatus reports: · There is money to be made in junk. Thanks to a lead from Russ, he picked up and recycled several appliances from Rose Kizelowicz. She gave a $20 donation and $12 made from recycling. Members thanked Tom for taking up the appliances and donating the $32 to the organization. · Burning has been stopped at the Recycling Center. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) sent a letter to the Township, stating that a municipality cannot burn municipal waste. – Members asked for a definition of Municipal Waste? Members discussed how this will affect the Big Junk Drop Off in April and the Township residents. · Thanks to Carol’s persistence at the Commissioners meetings and work-sessions, Wells Fargo is finally cleaning up the burnt out house next to her. According to the Fire Insurance Escrow Act, a claim does not have to be settled before money is placed into a municipal escrow account. · The Commissioners, at the last meeting, went on record in support of a County or State prison within the Township. Members discussed the pros and cons of a prison.
Committee Reports: o The next event will be July 31st Arts and Crafts and a bingo. · On the Fall Festival, Carolyn reports that the 1st check was received from a crafter. The next meeting will be the 16th. Publicity Chairman, John Jarecki reports: 1. Meeting announcement was sent to both papers – it was seen in the Times Leader not the Citizens Voice. 2. The Citizens Voice and the Times Leader ran the article on the breathalyzer donation given to the Police Department from this organization and the Glen Lyon Crime Watch. 3. $325 was given to Steven M. for the Summer Newsletter ads. 4. The May primary election results were not published in the Summer Newsletter. The results can be put in for Fall. Members discussed the comments made by the Commissioners at the last meeting concerning the forum which the Newport Township Community Organization sponsored. This forum was not sponsored by or had any connection to Renew Newport which is a separate organization that supported five of the nine candidates than ran for Commissioner. 5. Tom commented on Shannon Doyne article on July 3rd in the Times Leader which Mr. Wilkes stated the forum was not a fair forum. Tom was also misquoted in the article.
No Trustee Report
Unfinished Business · There is a problem with placing the plaque on Ed’s stone. Tom is working on it.
New Business: · Members discussed DEP correspondents to the Township on burning and the effect it will have on the Great Pennsylvania Clean up for next year. · Now that we have out 501c3 status, Murph asked if we can contact Greg Gulick to work on commission for recreation grants. Palmira will contact Greg. · Members discussed the possibility of recycling electronics twice a year using cardboard containers for storage. · Tom will be taking tires to the recycling center at Hanover High School on the 21st. · Tom reminded everyone to support the local merchants, especially those that run ads in our newsletter.
Good of the Order Dates to remember · July 18th Commissioners work-session · August 6th Commissioners monthly meeting. The September meeting will be held the first Wednesday, September 5th.
Carolyn made a motion to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Joan, all voted in favor. Meeting adjourned at 7:55 pm.
