President, Stephen Phillips called the meeting to order introducing all new faces, then, proceeded to follow the agenda set on March 10th.

 

Steven Masakowski read the minutes from the previous meeting held February 24, 2009. Mary Margaret moved that the minutes be approved as read and placed on file, seconded by Carol, all voted in favor.

 

Treasurer, Steve Masakowski read and presented the treasurers report.

Bill made a motion to accept the treasurers report as read and placed on file, seconded by Tom, all voted in favor.

Steve M prepared a budget report for 2009 and placed on file.

 

Bills & Communications

1.        $45 to Tom for the purchase of maps for the illegal dumpsite project.

Tom made a motion to budget $150 towards the illegal dumpsite projects, seconded by Heidi, all voted in favor.

2.        $147.90 reimbursement to Palmira for ink and 300 DVD’s for the 2nd production.

Bill made a motion to approve bills submitted, seconded by Carol, all voted in favor.

 

2nd Vice President, Tom Kashatus:

1.        Cleanup Events were discussed.  Volunteers are needed.

2.        Tom made a motion to hold our 1st meeting, on the second Tuesday in May, at 6:30, at the Guardian Care Center, Sheatown, seconded by Mary Margaret, all voted in favor.

3.        Tom made a motion to acquire special metal lifetime membership cards at a cost of $15, and offer them at a charge of $50 for lifetime members, seconded by Carol, all voted in favor.

4.        Members discussed the issues surrounding our request for meeting minutes from the Township, the Authority, and the Recreation Board.

5.        The Recreation Board meetings are set for the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6:00, at the Municipal Building.

6.        New memberships received are:

a)        Pasquale and Melissa Bova, Kami Hemminger, and Michelle Almodovar, sponsored by Palmira

b)        George and Theresa Van Dyke sponsored by Tom

c)        Allan Zerfoss sponsored by Mary Margaret

 

Publicist, Bill Hourigan:

1.     The Spring Newsletter is ready to go, on the approval of the Board.

2.     Volunteers needed for advertising.

 

Cleanup up Projects, Palmira:

1.        Presented an overview about the PA Clean Ways workshop held at DEP on March 19th.  John also attended this workshop.

2.        Three events are scheduled in April beginning 20th thru the 24th with the Big Junk Drop Off from 9 to 3 at the recycling center in Wanamie, on the 25th the Community Pride Event picking up litter throughout the Township which PennDOT will remove along the Main Roads, on the 27th thru the 30th we have partnered with PEC to clean 5 area illegal dumpsites.  County prisoners will clean up these sites.  We will provide lunch and refreshments along with the trucks to move junk to the main roads where PennDOT will pick up, and trucks to transport recyclables.  Volunteers are needed for all events.

 

Fundraising, Heidi reports:

1.     Heidi has $140 in her account to design the Glen Lyon Coal Breaker, the 2nd miniature, in a series of 5.  No motion is needed.

2.     Tom made a motion for Hiedi to order 60 high school miniatures, not to exceed $600, seconded by Carol, all voted in favor.

3.     Pictures are needed for the 2nd DVD especially in Sheatown and Alden.

 

Trustees, Francis is reviewing the financial report

 

Other Business

1.        Several members are interested to chair the Fall Festival and the Summer Fun Events.

2.        Members discussed a donation requested by Carol, the director of children services at the Mill Memorial Library. 

John made a motion to donate $342 towards the purchase of a die*cut machine for the Mill Memorial Library in Nanticoke, 2nd by Bill, members voted in favor.

3.        Members discussed sponsoring a softball team.

Tom made a motion to donate $250 to sponsor a South Valley Babe Ruth softball team, seconded by Palmira, all voted in favor.

4.        Tom’s distribution request is met to increase the newsletters by 100 copies for The Variety Stop and PenMart.

5.        Tom reminded members to pay dues.  45 to 50 members did not pay for 2009.

6.        Eric Van Dyke noticed a wide variety of trucks turning off Rt. 29, then, traveling through Newport Township to the power plant.  His investigation led him to Harold Hill a PennDOT Engineer who placed a weight limit of 20 ton on a bridge that spans across Harvey Creek in West Nanticoke.  It turns out repairs on this bridge may not be completed until November 2009.  Until then these trucks will continue through the Township.  A full report is attached.

 

Carol made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Tina, all voted in favor.  Meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM.
