Treasurer, Steve Masakowski read and presented the treasurers report.

·         The organization has a total of $4,909.79 in the General Fund, $100.00 petty cash, and $100.00 unclaimed cash prize.  Expenses exceed income by $18.79.

·         The organization has 77 paid 2007 members.

Joe made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as presented and placed on file.  Carolyn seconded the motion with all members present voting in the affirmative.

Bills and Communications Steve M reports:

·         The Guardian Elder Care sent a copy of their March Newsletter.  They are holding a Craft Fair May 12th for anyone wishes to attend or take part in.

The 1st Vice President, Russ Sager, no report:

The 2nd Vice President, Tom Kashatus reports:

·         The Big Junk Drop Off:

To date, the Township Street Department has taken 24,252 lbs of light metals to Talbit & Sons Recycling Center receiving a dollar amount of $443.50.  Allan’s pays top dollar where Talbits does not.  One (1) ton of garbage was also dumped free at the Alliance Landfill.

·         Memberships:

The next phase is targeting areas in the Township.  Currently memberships are ahead of last year.

·         Members discussed issues and concerns brought to the attention of the Commissioners on May 7th.

1.       The need of a Police Blotter to inform residents, in a timely manner, of what is happening.

2.       When asked about building a county jail in Newport, their response was “It’s all taken care of”.  The Citizens Voice states Dallas went on record as wanting to meet with the State.

3.       Keep pushing for The Adam’s Alert.

4.       On Code Enforcement, a list of 24 derelict properties was submitted to the Commissioners with the question of what plan is in place to resolve these occurrences.

We need to continue to push forward, receive answers, and have the issues resolved.

Publicity Chairman, John Jarecki reports:

1.       Meeting announcement was seen in the Citizens' Voice, unsure of the Times Leader.

2.       575 flyers announcing the Public Forum were printed and distributed at a cost of $42.67.

3.       A three (3) page Voters Guide was published at a cost of $116.60.  550 copies were distributed.  Six (6) of the nine (9) candidates responded to the format, three did not, John Wilkes, Paul Czapracki, and Michael Roke.

4.       Office Max can no longer honor their previous agreement of printing 800 Newsletter at a price of $300.  They will now charge $350.

Summer Newsletter deadline for articles and ads is May 30th.

Committee Reports:

·         Heidi reports, that the Dollar Store, one of our vendors for selling the license plate covers, may be in trouble.  It will be a great loss if the Township loses another business.  Members discussed ways to keep it open.  As an organization we can only encourage people to shop.

·         It was mentioned at the Neighborhood Crime Watch meeting in order to junk copper you must show your drivers license.  Copper is being stolen from homes and sold as junk.

Trustee’s Joe and Francis, No Report:

Unfinished Business:

·         A reminder to attend the Candidates Forum on May 9th.

This event is sponsored by our Community Organization.  Stephen Phillips will monitor this event as he has at a number of forums within the region, such as the Chamber of Commerce in Berwick.  At that debate all candidates were in attendance and comments were impressive.

New Business:

·         On May 29th Newport Police are holding a car wash to purchase a taser.

Steve M. made a motion to donate $200 to the Newport Police Department to use in the training of officers or the purchase of a taser.  Carolyn seconded the motion with all members present voting in the affirmative.

Good of the Order

·         As stated numerous times The Newport Township Community Organization is not a political organization and does not sponsor candidates running for Commissioner of any political office.

·         Renew Newport is a separate organization who is sponsoring five (5) candidates running for Commissioner three (3) Democrats and two (2) Republicans.

Bill made a motion to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Cindy, all voted in favor.

Meeting adjourned at 7:50 pm.
