Stephen Phillips called the meeting to order on the above date and time.
Acting for
Secretary Palmira Miller, Tom Kashatus
read the minutes from the previous meeting of August 25, 2009.
Stef made a motion to accept the minutes and
placed on file, seconded by Mary Jo, with all present voting in favor.
Treasurer
Steve Masakowski read and presented the treasurer’s report. The Community
Organization has a total of $11,436.11 in its FNCB checking and cash accounts.
Its income to date this year is $7,410.40 and expenses to date this year are
$10,288.91. Expenses exceed income by $2,878.51. Steve recommended that we
eliminate the Illegal Dump Site Reserve from our list of funds. Carol made a
motion to accept the treasurer’s report as read and placed on file, seconded by
Stef, with all present voting in favor.
Bills and Correspondence:
1.
Payments for bills during the month amounted to $1149.20, the largest
being a payment of $991.00 to CPS Direct for printing our 2010 calendar.
2.
There was no correspondence.
2nd Vice President, Tom Kashatus
reports:
1.
2009 membership is at 143.
2.
Marie Lock Stankevitch wrote a letter to Tom that commended the Community
Organization on the professionalism of its newsletter and its energetic activity
on behalf of the Township.
3.
Tom moved to accept Leigh Bonczewski as a member, and Carolyn seconded
it, with all present voting in the affirmative.
4.
Palmira will receive the 2009 Northeast PA Environmental Partnership
Award from the Pennsylvania Environmental Council at a dinner on October 22.
Two complementary tickets were received for the dinner. Tom made a motion to
pay for two more tickets, and Stef seconded it, with all present voting in the
affirmative. Leigh said that Guardian Elder Care will pay for two additional
tickets to the dinner.
5.
Tom said he would suggest a form of junior membership in the Community
Organization.
6.
Tom said that he talked to Mike Dziak, CEO of Earth Conservancy (EC),
about EC’s plan to use cameras to monitor illegal dumping. Tom will ask Mike
Mosely, a man whom Mr. Dziak wants to manage these cameras, to speak to us about
them.
7.
Tom said that the Township will help us with our October tire pick up and
recycling program by allowing us to use the municipal shed in Wanamie to store
collected tires.
Committee Reports
Tom Kashatus, acting for Bill Hourigan
1.
Tom said that the September newsletter has eighteen pages and about
twenty ads.
2.
Bill has either taken the newsletter to the printer or will soon do so.
John Jarecki, acting for Heidi Selecky and
Paul Jarecki
1.
John said that Heidi and Paul had new income from DVD and calendar sales.
2.
He also said that the 2010 calendars were printed and ready for sale.
Carolyn Phillips (on the Fall Festival)
1.
Carolyn said that Front and Center Music wants more time at the Festival
for its students to perform.
2.
She said that the following would participate: John Stanky, the K-9 Show,
Just Incredible (the magician), the Moon Walk, a Car Show, the chili cook off,
Wyoming Valley Remote Control Fliers, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, Champ (the
Yankees mascot), and a Chinese Auction.
3.
Tom added that he wanted to distribute, along with food tickets at the
Fall Festival, a business card giving information about Community Organization
membership and our recycling program.
Other Business
1.
Lee will talk to Bobby Beroski, who lives in Nanticoke, about making
T-shirts with the name of the Community Organization for sale at the Fall
Festival.
2.
We decided to clean up Kirmar Parkway, our adopted highway, on October
17.
3.
Tom moved that we move the illegally dumped trash just off Kirmar to the
highway, where PennDot will take it away. Palmira seconded the motion. A
majority approved the motion. We will also do this on October 17.
4.
Steve Masakowski made a motion to give Mary Margaret a budget of $200 for
her project of welcoming businesses to the Township. Carolyn seconded the
motion, with all present voting in the affirmative.
5.
Tom said that Mark Wolf, who has a business of restoring old photos in
Nanticoke, would like to show the film “Miracle of the Bells” in the Knights of
Columbus Hall in Glen Lyon.
6.
We discussed the Community Organization members’ early work in
documenting the problem of neglected and abandoned buildings and their continued
efforts to bring this matter to the attention of the Commissioners, and its
effect of leading to the Township’s present demolition program.
Carolyn made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
Palmira seconded the motion, with all voting in favor.
Meeting adjourned at 8:10 pm.
