The Newport Township Community Organization held its first public forum September 25, 2007, in Alden Manor, with thirty six (36) people in attendance.

President, Stephen Phillips thanked all for coming out and introduced Mike Dziak, President/CEO, of Earth Conservancy.

Mr. Dziak, gave a broad overview of Earth Conservancy becoming incorporated in 1992, and how they acquired 16,000 acres from a Blue Coal bankruptcy court in 1994, at a price of $16 million, of which, 10,000 acres will be used for green space, 2,500 will be developed, 2,500 used for commercial business parks, and 170 acres were given away, part of that to Newport Township.

He spoke on the following issues for Newport Township:

o       Key to the future being the highway expansion project.

o       Inadequate water supply or servicing your own.

o       Land considered to build a pilot ethanol plant, a state prison, a photo farm

o       The purchase of Regional Equipment Center.

o       They fund the Compose Facility and offer free compose and dumping.

The public had a chance to ask questions, review literature and photographs.

Earth Conservancy won the 2007 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.  They will continue to do the right things to benefit the community.
