Attendees:
President, Stephen Phillips called the meeting to order on the above date and time then proceeded to follow the order of business.
Secretary, Palmira Miller read the minutes from the previous meeting held April 25, 2006. Mary Margaret moved that the minutes be approved as read and placed on file. Carolyn seconded the motion with all members present voting in the affirmative.
Treasurer, Steve Masakowski read and presented the treasurers report. · The organization has a total of $4,204.58 in the FNCB General Fund, $88.40 in the Printing Reserve and $100.00 petty cash. · The organization has sixty-nine (69) active members or, twenty-four (24) more than the same period last year. · Thanks to everyone who sold tickets. They were all sold with Faye being the top seller. Linda made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as presented and placed on file. Heidi seconded the motion with all members present voting in the affirmative.
Communications, Steve M. reported: · Marcella Kelly of the Sedor Agency donated $10.00 and would like a copy of the newsletter mailed to her. She was given John Jarecki’s # and the newsletters are published on our website.
The 1st Vice President, Russ Sager reported: · Comments on the 501c3 status were reviewed with Attorney Kule and may take about 3 more weeks before it goes through.
The 2nd Vice President, Tom Kashatus reported and members discussed the following: · Reinstate the Civil Service Board in the Township. Responsibilities are to act as an advisory board to the Commissioners for the hiring of firemen and police officers. Past members still interested are Bob Sabotka, and Ron Womelsdorf of Sheatown. Carol Marcincavage and Stephanie Stogoski would be interested. · Russ mentioned twenty-three (23) cats were removed from a home on Arch St. · The South Valley Strategic Plan was presented to the public at LCCC. o After the presentation Stephen P. asked Joe Lack why no one from Newport Township was involved in this development. Joe stated it was an over-site on their part. · In order to move forward Newport Township should put together a redevelopment plan of its own. This can be started by picking out pockets to achieve small goals. o In Glen Lyon there are six acres that can be developed for town houses or condominiums. o For Wanamie, Murph spoke to the water company. A project will begin in about 2 years to install new water lines. Planning should begin now in order for the water company to lay adequate lines to areas that can be developed into new businesses such as at the site of the Regional Equipment Center. Murph will mention this to the Commissioners at their next worksession. · Commissioner Vishnefski asked Palmira to remove the organizational sign on his corner lot in Wanamie. He stated it was like putting a democratic sign in front of the Presidents house. The signs were removed. The signs were there to advertise the Great PA Cleanup. Also under this project volunteers removed all the tires at the rec park. · The lack of Code Enforcement and the derelict properties were discussed. · Delia Bracero, a private resident, spoke about her concern. o Her daughter, a senior in high school, received a letter from the township manager stating she published an ad in the classified section, advertising property for rent and an occupancy permit and inspection is required in Newport Township. Delia never placed this ad and should not have received this letter.
Publicity Chairman, John Jarecki reports: 1. Meeting announcement was published in the Times Leader, but not in the Citizens Voice. 2. Summer Newsletter deadline dates are May 20th for articles, May 31st for ads, June 14th for printing, and June 20th is scheduled for distribution. o Eleven people are now working on the newsletter with Linda Hourigan, Barbara Pelak, and Sia Sager working on ads. 3. Carol Marcincavage took photos for the Great PA Cleanup on April 22nd which will be linked to the website newporttownship.com.
Committee Reports: · On the Historical Garden a committee and site is needed. Commissioner Vishnefski did not care if a garden was planted at the rec park. Al made a motion to plant a garden at the rec park. Steph seconded the motion. A question on the motion about the rec park being the site for the garden. Al amended the motion for the site to be chosen. Steph seconded the amended motion with all members present voting in the affirmative. · Carolyn reported the fall festival is scheduled for October 14, 2006. · Get your recipes in for the cook book. · Mary Margaret and Murph are working on summer projects for all ages to be held at the rec park. o Report is attached listing activities, dates, and times.
Unfinished Business · Stephen P. opened the nomination for trustee. o Joe Maloney nominated Murph. Joe Maloney nominated himself. Russ Sager closed the nominations. Faye seconded the motion with all members present voting in the affirmative. Votes were counted by Steve M. and Palmira. Stephen P. named Joe Maloney as Victor. Russ made a motion for all ballots to be destroyed. Steph seconded the motion with all members present voting in the affirmative. Ballots were destroyed.
New Business Stephen P. introduced Chantel Kania who runs the Boys & Girls Club of America in cooperation with the Housing Authority. The Club House is located at the Rock Street Development in Glen Lyon and open to children ages 6 to 18. Chantel presented an overview of the programs available to the area children. Mary Margaret and Murph will coordinate children events with her.
The next Commissioners work session is May 17th at 5:00 pm.
Our next scheduled meeting is May 23, 2006 at 6:30 PM, Knights of Columbus in Glen Lyon.
